Bhishma Panchak is the period of five days which culminates on Karthika Purnima day. It is also believed to be observed for the last five days of Karthika month.
As per the legend, Sri Bhishma had observed fasting for these five days praying to Bhagwan. Invariably, devotees commence this Vrat on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and complete it on Karthika Purnima.
Karthika month is also named as Damodara month ascribed to the devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu. The five-day Vrat period is also referred as Vishnu Panchak.
During Bhishma Panchak period, Bhagwan Vishnu Murthy is worshipped with Thulsi, Bilvam, Chandan and other auspicious things. Invariably, devotees observe complete or partial fasting.
Observation of Vrat during Bhishma Panchak is believed to alleviate the ill effects of all past sins. It is also believed to grant moksha at Bhagwan’s feet.
The ensuing Bhishma Panchak period is from Monday, 11th November 2024 to Friday, 15th November 2024.
