Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra In Hindi: The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (महामृत्युञ्जय मन्त्र) is addressed to Lord Shiva to overcome the fear from an unknown event or even death.

The other alternate names of this Shiva mantra is the Rudra Mantra (depicting the furious aspect of Lord Shiva), Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Tryambakam Mantra, Mahadev Mantra, Mahamrityunjay Jaap, Mrita-Sanjivini (life-restoring) Mantra, or Maha Mrityunjaya Stotram. The Mahadev Mantra alludes to Shiva’s 3-eyes. This Mantra is also known as “Great Death-conquering” Mantra.

Origin of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
There are two versions on the history of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
- In the first version, it is believed that once King Daksha cursed Lord Moon (Chandra), and Rishi Markandeya gave the Maha Mrityunjaya Stotram to Sati (King Daksha’s daughter) for the moon.
- In the another version, Lord Shiva himself gave this Tryambakam mantra to Rishi Sukracharya, who revealed to Rishi Sukracharya, who then shared with Rishi Dadhichi. Then Rishi Dadhichi taught it to King Kshuva and then ended up in the Shiva Purana.
The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra can be found in the Rig Veda (Seventh Mandala.59.12), the Yajur Veda (III.60), and the Atharva Veda (XIV.1.17).
