Shri Shiv Chalisa in Hindi: Shri Shiv Chalisa (श्री शिव चालीसा) or Shiva Chalisa is one of the hymns chanted in prayer to and praise of Lord Shiva, the ultimate of the Tri-Murthies. “Chalis” in the Hindi Language means forty. The prayer consists of forty verses in praise of Lord Shiva.
Shiva Chalisa was authored by Saint Ayodhyadas as is evident from the purvanga (preliminary) sloka. Moreover, Shiva Chalisa (or Shiv Aarti) is perceived to be a part of Shiva Purana which was compiled by Shri Ved Vyas before it was taught to his disciple Shri Romaharshana.
